Discovery

She planned to write
a pretty poem about polish.
This feminist first manicure
and what it meant for her outspoken
disapproval of economic spending
on matters she deemed decidedly
non-critical to survival or career,
provided many poetic possibilities
as ripe as the summer’s last peaches.

Sighting half her small town’s
police force inside her apartment’s mail room,
complete with dog. Animal presence
automatically draws overdramatic mind
to Bull Connor and his tooth baring canines aimed
at civil rights seeking black boys.

All thoughts of
newly found sparkle
vanish.

An Olympoholic Questions Andy Murray

(who won the men’s tennis singles gold
for Great Britain, but is from Scotland)

How did it feel- those London crowds
clapping and claiming you?
Did you wish the flag enwrapping you
only bore Scottish blue and white
instead Team GB’s red, white, and blue?
In dreams, do you represent true homeland
in Rio come 2016?

Do What You Do

Do what you do for joy,
not dollars.
Do what you do because
there is nothing else.
Do what you do,
even though you need a day job.

Never stop!

Spirit of Olympus

Spirit cannot force body to focus-
dizzy, room spinning exhaustion
leads to duo of needed naps.

One week’s works of days
that end at three AM and restart
at 9, trying to chronicle greatness
broadcast via cathode ray tubes.

I am thinking of undone work
as body, still tired, rouses
and housemate, who job involves
lifting spastic physical self,
enters with perfect non-sequitur,
“Did you know we can print houses now?”

Advice

Breathe… stretch… love…
cleanse… move… smile…
Become…

Awareness

(Theme: Louis XIV (1638-1715) "Why are you weeping? Did you imagine that I was immortal?" (He noticed as he lay on his deathbed that his attendants were crying.) Write a poem with this quote in mind. Dedicated to Karin DiNardi of Philadelphia ADAPT. You are missed.)

I thought you'd come back
to me... to us... to Philly.
Despite what the doctors said.

After all, hadn't you taught me-
years ago- medical science doesn't
dictate possibility?

I was aware of the fleeting nature of
every body's animate existence,
but refused to believe
your time elapsed

Remember Me

As a patriot who dissented, as needed.
As a wordsmith who used craft to facilitate
justice and survival.
As someone who left it all on whatever court
she aimed to own that moment.
As a student who never stopped learning.
As saying, “If you don’t want it badly enough
to hurt for it,
you don’t actually want it.”
As a woman who came to love her
crippled, queer, brown body
despite certain people’s disgust.
