Awareness

(Theme: Louis XIV (1638-1715) "Why are you weeping? Did you imagine that I was immortal?" (He noticed as he lay on his deathbed that his attendants were crying.) Write a poem with this quote in mind. Dedicated to Karin DiNardi of Philadelphia ADAPT. You are missed.)

I thought you'd come back
to me... to us... to Philly.
Despite what the doctors said.

After all, hadn't you taught me-
years ago- medical science doesn't
dictate possibility?

I was aware of the fleeting nature of
every body's animate existence,
but refused to believe
your time elapsed
